My last reflection on MMSEL course

As you know, Time passes so quickly. I am happy because I have finished studying MMSEL for a semester but  I am sad because for one semester, I have not used the time well to learn MMSEL.  Nevertheless, I have to write my final reflection. Yah, this is  my last reflection of MMSEL course. this about analyzing a case.

Actually, I cannot say agree or not to the teacher action in the case of “The Chatty Students”, because I believe that every teacher has different ways to solve existing problems in the class, especially with regard to the students. For example, in the case of “The Chatty Students” it happened when a chatty student fails to keep quiet, despite numerous interventions, a new junior secondary school language arts teacher threatens to have the student removed from another teacher’s class. It may be the best way according to the teacher concerned. But if I am in the position of that teacher or I become a new teacher in a school, I must consider in advance about the ways I would take, I should think about the impact and influence of my actions to the students.

As new teachers, we must know the background of the students because according to the theory of multiple Intelligence, everyone has their intelligence. Beside that, the step that should we do in the beginning is making classroom rules or agreement  (by the teacher and the students). Then if there is a violation by the students, we can provide minor intervention, begin by giving non-verbal cues until providing a choice to the students. We also have to reflect on teaching methods that we use in the class. Because our methods may influence to the students learning. if the provision of minor intervention and our teaching methods are not effective, we can provide Moderate Interventions.

We must remember that sometimes the punishment can lead to greater resistance from students. Because of that, becoming a teacher is not easy. I am very pleased to attend this MMSEL course. I learned many things to become a professional teacher, I hope the knowledge that I learned in MMSEL course can be useful and help me in the future.

 

Last reflection: Chatty Students

This is the last reflection for the whole semester period of MMSEL Class, in this reflection we were asked to reflect and analyze the Case in the Module.

Case Study 2

When a “chatty” student fails to keep quiet, despite numerous interventions, a new junior secondary school language arts teacher threatens to have the student removed from another teacher’s class.

Reading this case give me interpretation that the teacher threats the chatty students, if she does not stop her disruptive behaviors, teacher will remove the student from the other class taught by her.

Removing students from teacher other class appears to have positive effects for both teacher and student. The teacher receives relief from the aversive task. Unfortunately, both inappropriate student behavior and teacher’s removal of the student are likely to be repeated in the future, thus creating a negative reinforcement in the future because both teacher and student seem to benefit from a sequence of event that in fact has impact on learning and achievement. This also does not solve the disruptive behavior of the student itself. So I think giving that kind of punishment will only show how temperament the teacher was.

Being chatty in the class is not a very disruptive behavior, so it can be managed by minor interventions first. The minor interventions, such using non-verbal cues to make student be silent can be used. However, it is mentioned in the case numerous interventions had been used but failed to handle the disruptive behavior. In this case moderate intervention may be used carefully. Talk to students personally to student then tell her what will she benefit by showing the positive behavior,  Move student sitting near teacher chair or let the student sit alone will make the student don’t have friend to talk, this would handle the chatty behavior. However, if the student still being chatty and disrupt the lesson, teacher may instruct other students not to talk to chatty student during class.

Reflection for MMSEL Class:

I really love this class, because in this class I can reflect through my whole experience while in the school. Also, almost the knowledge that I learn in MMSEL class are very practical and closely related with my daily activity as teacher candidate, as learner and also as individual. MMSEL class also teach me to see from others perspective, to think from different point of view. I want to say thank you to bu Mima who already work hard to manage the class and make us understand on what is mean to be a motivating and professional teacher.

 

Elementary Teacher? Go Go Go!!

Before writing my reflection, I would like to say sorry to Miss. Mima because I am late to post this reflection. It is not my want, but my condition made me not able to post this reflection on time. I have to take a bed rest for a week and I could not do anything at that time.

In MMSEL session, on Wednesday, class was handled by a guest lecturer, her name was Miss. Arum (same with me, hehe), she came from SD Kembang and she taught there. Her topic was about “I’m a Happy Teacher”. From the beginning, Miss. Mima has said that we could get much knowledge from Miss. Arum, moreover for me, because I prefer taught elementary school than secondary school. I did not know why I choose to teach elementary school, whereas my friends ever said to me that students in elementary school were more difficult to be handled than secondary students, but I thought that elementary students were nice and kind. My perspective made me stronger to be elementary teacher; at least I could meet them everyday J

In MMSEL class, Miss. Arum shared about her experience when she taught in SD Kembang. She shared many interesting things, but here I would like to discuss some points. She shared about making rule in classroom. In the first coming to the class, teacher should set classroom rule together with students, so that students felt that they were included in making rule for themselves. After listening to Miss. Arum’s explanation, I had a plan in making agreement with my students in one of private primary school. There I taught the first grade so it could be useful to build students’ discipline and responsibility toward themselves from the beginning. And also I got the other lesson; it was about making statement of the rule. It would be better if we did not use the ordered sentences, such as “don’t……”, but we could use the positive sentences so that the statement gave positive spirit for students. For example, “if you want to go to toilet, let’s ask permission to the teacher”, that statement was more positive and easy to be read. It also could teach students that they had to ask permission if they would go to somewhere.

And then I learned how to handle students who had difficulties in learning. In my class, there were two students who had difficulties in learning and their teacher had given them a label as special students, they also sat beside the teacher so that they could follow lesson well. But I thought that it could affect their self-esteem, they also could feel that they were extremely different from the others. Then, I would know how to overcome that problem in the class. Miss. Arum suggested me to find their ability, because every student (even person) absolutely had ability. Then I would like to look for their ability and facilitate them so that they could feel that they were valuable.  

After this session, I felt that my soul was in elementary area. I love children and I love their attitude, their expression, and their honesty J

I teach and I Understand

Finally we teach!
Even this was for the last, but it was not least. As our group preparation, we did some discussion and looking for the source of material a few days before. We did distribution of task among us (Anggi, Firzie, Zahra and me), based on sub topic that will we teach. Actually we got a bit confuse in separate the subtopic for group activity in the class, because the subtopic in this topic was a bit much, but finally we could manage it well enough.
We did distribution of material that have to mastery in our intern group personal. Zahra had to mastery the subtopic about Management Strategies (Minor Interventions, Moderate Interventions and Using other as resources). Firzie had to mastery the subtopic about Dealing with aggression (fighting, bullying, and Defiance). Anggi had to mastery the subtopic about Classroom and school based programs (Social –enhancements , improving, social – adolescence, and 3C). And me, had to mastery the subtopic about Diversity and education. As we know that in our teaching we used games. And for prepare that games each of us had to made some questions and answer key based on the subtopic that we have to mastery.

Actually for some subtopic I still did not really understand yet, maybe because the subtopics that we have to teach are quite much and we distribute the subtopic for mastered. However when time to teach is come… I was became more understand by teaching!

How came? Because when we teach, I could hear the other friends’ point of view, other arguments, and other ideas when they share each other after they read the material. So it made me more understand about a part that I still didn’t understand before.

By this, I realize that Teaching is Learning Process, when we teach it means that we were learning together with them. If we already known first, we will understand more by teaching and if we still not really understand yet, we will be understand by teaching. Suddenly I remember a statement from my teacher when I was in Vocational High School, she said “sebenarnya guru itu bukan berarti lebih pintar dan lebih tau dari siswanya, guru hanyalah belajar lebih dulu dan lebih tau lebih dahulu dari siswanya.”

And I think that’s true.

When we face Belligerence students, what should we do? (Case 3 in module)

First the teacher has to build good communication with that student, asks the student to stop her/his disruptive behavior’s patiently. Show that we are care and love her/him, tell the benefit if s/he do not disrupt the class and also tell the consequence if s/he still disrupt the class. Teacher has to build more patience and power struggles in her heart to deal this kind of cases.

I think students like this case should not be threated by violence but with gentleness and patience, but teacher still keep distinct. So that, students will feel that they are cared and loved by the teacher.

Reflection for whole semester

Learning MMSEL course is interesting moreover it was taught by Miss Mima, who always creates a joke when she explains the material and create the activity that make me fun to learn, even we learn with fun but still serious to catch the content.

During we learn MMSEL course, some topics were related with Educational Psychology course. We use some psychologies theories and use Psychology book as our source. Anyway, psychology is interesting for me, so it make MMSEL become more interesting for me.

I hope all knowledge that we’ve learned in MMSEL will be useful one day when we are becoming a teacher. Hopefully we can be good teacher in the future. Aamiin

I don’t Believe This is the Last, but I Believe This is not the Least

Hmmm…this is the last meeting in MMSEL course. The topic is about how to dealing with misbehavior students. Then, the case study was when a “chatty” student fails to keep quiet, despite numerous interventions, a new junior secondary school language arts teacher threatens to have the student removed from another teacher’s class.

In this case, I think a teacher has a problem. May be she don’t have idea how to deal with that student because she is still a new teacher. As our topic in this week, we can deal with misbehavior students by intervention. We can do minor intervention such as move closer to the student, do eye contact, directly tell to stop, until give choices to students. If minor intervention is fail, teacher can talk personally to the students and give them choices what they really want in the classroom. Besides, teachers also have to reflect with their teaching method. Perhaps student feel bored, then doing chit chat. However, students are our mirror. So, as a teacher we have to patient.

In this case, I think teacher has no patient enough. Giving punishment to students is justified, but we need to consider what kind of punishment that makes student learn. Don’t we give punishment which makes them keep repeating and also makes their self esteem becomes decrease. I hope, we can do proper way in handling misbehavior students in the future.  

Reflection for MMSEL course:

I really enjoying in join this course. Every meeting in this course, I’m very enthusiastic. This course and the lecturer, also my colleagues always give me inspiration. I believe that as good as a course, if not supported by a qualified lecturer, and then it would be useless. Thank you so much, Ibu Mima. I hope I will be a teacher as you, perhaps more than you.

Reflection week 14: Managing Classroom Ala Ibu Arum

Owh, this week must be a great week. If for certain week we learn from our colleagues, so in this week we have a guest lecturer from the other school. Actually, the lecturer is a teacher in SD Kembang and the name is Ibu Sekar Ayu Adhiningrum which is called Ibu Arum.  In this session she has shared her experiences in teaching grade six at SD Kembang. Because of grade six is enough to accept some rules which is a little formal, so Ibu Arum makes a rule in order to manage her class. When making some rules, Ibu Arum agrees that her students has to involved in that, because the age of sixth grade is enough to make agreement (rules).  Then, I agree with her.

Ibu Arum said that each student in her class has a task. For example, student A has to write the schedule in the schedule board. So, if there are new schedules, student A has to responsible about that. Then, another student have different task, such as guide pray before study. I think, these habits make student to responsible and independent in their live. Besides that, it also makes Ibu Arum’s tasks easier in managing the class.

She admitted that her class in SD Kembang is well managed because of it is small class. The total of student is 12. However, when my classmate asking about how if Ibu Arum manage the large classroom? Then, she can’t answer clearly and conclusively.  However, I’m really proud of her. She always improves her skill in teaching by looking for creative method from some books and other resources. I think, she is enjoying her teaching, that’s why she titled her presentation as I’M HAPPY TEACHER.  The tip that I interested is any tasks have to be done early. She is very inspiring.

In managing classroom is our challenge as candidate of teacher, especially a large class. This session motivate me to make every moment in classroom is learning, I have to bring my curiosity.

My Reflection: How to Deal with a Disruptive Behaviour Student

This is the last reflection related to the MMSEL’s course this semester. I felt happy, because finally the 5th semester is ended, but other side, i felt sad because this MMSEL’s course was very interesting course and the lecture was so friendly and motivated the students to learn.

In this reflection, the lecturer asked us to analyze several cases from the module. She asked us to choose one from two topics given. At first, i felt confuse which one that i choose to be analyzed. Then, i decided to analyze the case 3: Beligerence as the topic.

Below is the synopsis of the case:
Synopsis: A senior secondary school math teacher loses her temper when a low-achieveing student engages in disruptive behaviours and refuses to comply with her demands to stop.
Key concepts: communicating effectively, establishing positive relationship, power struggles, students efficacy.

As a teacher, it is very important to build a close relationship with our students. It is our responsibilty to know what they fet and they want and to give them impression that they are accepted and they are part of community/classroom.

Related with the case, before teacher decided what they should do, it is wise if teacher try to explore the students personal background. Is this student have problem in his/her family, problems with her friend, etc. By knowing the background, perhaps it will help teacher to make a decision, find the reasons/motive of the students and also help when the teacher negotiate with the student.

To deal with that, to explore the personal background of the students is not an easy task, so we need to communicate effectively with the student. In communicating, very important for teacher to pursue the students to believe that we will help his/her. We need to use the personal approach to know why the student refused to stop.

Perhaps the problem related with academic aspect, because the student is a low-achieving student or perhaps other problem influenced her/his disruptive beahviour. Teacher need to establish positive relationship with this kind of student. By using this relationship, teacher can improve the believes in her/his self that he/she is a good person, talented and then tell her/his to use his/her talent in good way. The self efficacy of the students will help her/his to contribute in this class.

The last is when the students still in uncontrol situation, teacher need to state the rules. Tell her/his that the behaviour can affect other students. Teachers have powers to manage the class.

How to face a chatty student?

For the case, If I where he/she teacher, I have a step for making this students to keep quiet. This is my step:

  • Communicate the rules in class regarding talking. In conveying those rules to students, make it  clear when students are allowed to talk and when they are not. I might also tell the students that they are not allowed to talk when i am teaching or when a classmate is asking or answering.
  • Use nonverbal cues. Make eye contact with the student and give a signal. Talk with him privately and agree on a signal I will give when I need him to stop talking. The idea is to give him a reminder without interrupting the flow of the lesson.
  • Move

Chatty Student and Her Language Art Teacher

This last meeting, my group were going to present a topic how to dealing with misbehavior students. Based on the second case in module, “chatty students” how to handle it? First what should we do is identify first. The case is “a chatty student fails to keep quiet, despite numerous interventions, a new junior secondary school language arts teacher threatens to have the student removed from another teacher’s class.”
Well, from this case we could interpret that might be the teacher already did many intervention for the student that chatty. However it didn’t work. It seems from the words (despite numerous interventions). The first possibility is this student chatty but infrequent, then might be teacher only use minor interventions. However, it seems that this chatty student disrupt learning activity in always talking. Such numerous interventions are useless. Then, there are some possibilities too, the intervention is not effective enough in handle this students. Based on this situation, if minor intervention is not work, teacher should do moderate intervention. In this case teacher do moderate intervention by remove the privileges to join another class. This issue is very harm since relate to other teacher classroom management and also teacher also remove students’ right to learn another subject that might be she loved it much. The way teacher threatens students might be not false, but also not true, since it so hard to handle student like that.
Might be it would be better to reflect again with the language art teacher before he/she treat the student like that. That is natural for people to talk and socialize even when learning process, for example if she/he want to ask friend or discuss. But, might be the time is inappropriate. This is the task for the teacher to realize appropriate time for speaking. If children talking during discussion and project or other, then just let it. We don’t need to make intervention for it, then if students talk during our explanation, the task for us to really make interventions. Might be in this case, the rule and procedures have big role in make the intervention. To handle this student, as teacher we should make agreement to the time for speaking / respect. There are time for teacher speaking other listening. Students speaking, others also listening. If this rule still not effective might be teacher could gave some consequence in the rule. Somekind of punishment and other. It would be better if teacher state the rule don’t listen to your friend if I’m talking, then students will neglect this chatty student. Or just said no peer disruption. It would be better. If it doesn’t work, then might be it would be better when we already state the consequence first for students who chatty before really remove the students from another class.

MMSEL Class:
I’m enjoying the class. The learning process is not lecturing always, but more full of fun and activities. Learning process also establish the constructivist learning method. We could build understanding by our discussion. Lot of fun, lot of smile, lot of discussion. The material that been brought also meaningful and have big role when we teach later.

How to deal with “Chatty” Student

The case is about when a “chatty” student fails to keep quiet, despite numerous interventions and her new junior secondary school language arts teacher threatens her to be removed from another teacher’s class.

This case is about student’s problem behavior which generally happens in junior and secondary. I think, junior or high school student still enjoy talking with each other in every time and everywhere. They still cannot differ when the precise time and where the precise place that they can talk each other. Actually, we already learned the strategies how to manage and solve the problem like this case this case in this week. Management strategies, is as one of subtopic for this week which explain about minor and moderate interventions for problem behaviors.

Actually, this case requires only minor interventions. Minor interventions explain that the problem usually do not disrupt class activities and learning. One of the examples of minor intervention is engaging in social talk when it is not allowed. It relates to “chatty” student case. To solve that problem, teacher can implement some strategies of minor interventions, which are 1) use nonverbal cues, such as making eye contact with “chatty” student and give a signal such as a finger to the lips, and more, a head shake, or a hand signal to issue a desist, 2) Move closer to students, such as when “chatty” student starts misbehaving, simply moving near the student, and they will stop to be in misbehavior, 3) Directly and assertively tell to “chatty” students to stop, such as establish direct eye contact with the student, be assertive, and tell the student to stop behavior. Teacher should manage her temper, when she warns the students. By implementing the three strategies well, in a timely and effective manner, “chatty” student will decrease her bad habit step by step.

If the three of strategies still cannot solve the problem, teacher can give her a choice. Teacher asks student to stop, or if still talk, she should talk in front of the class.

However, this case stated that her new junior secondary school language arts teacher threatens her to be removed from another teacher’s class. I think it is fine to remove “chatty” student from class during the way teacher remove the student in a good way, but not for another teacher’s class. Each class has classroom agreement, so art teacher does not have right to say like that. Teacher should use positive reinforcement like using time-out. Moderate interventions also offer the similar strategy with art teacher. In moderate, teacher can isolate or remove students. Teacher can place the student in a time-out room designated by the school. However, teacher should be sure to clearly identify the student’s behavior that resulted in the time-out. If “chatty” student’s is still in misbehavior, teacher should re-identify the problem and place the student in time-out again. After the time-out, do not comment on how well “chatty” student behaved during the time-out, return “chatty” student to the activity that was interrupted.

As I stated before, this case happens with student in secondary high school. As another strategy, teacher also can intervene him with the school’s policy and/ or involve the principal and/or parents if necessary.

I hope, we are as the next generation of teacher, when we face this case, we can manage and solve the similar case well in next.

This week is the last week to write weekly reflection in MMSEL class. Yeay… but, I will miss this moment someday. L The reflection made me realized that teacher is not only delivering the materials but also educate students, also teacher is the important one who can decrease degradation moral. Teacher’s profession is not easy.

MMSEL class is different from another class. This class made me always reflecting to myself after I got the materials. I reflected about my experience in senior high school. I tried to evaluate my senior high school teachers in managing the class and their teaching style (strategy and method) to deliver the materials and to manage the students who has differ background and learning style. From the evaluation, I learned the strategies in how to manage the classroom, how to solve student’s behavior problem, how to motivate students in teaching and learning.

This class also taught me much how to motivate and managing myself before I motivate my students and manage my classroom.
