Friends, on second meeting, again, I still excited to learn about motivation. I don’t know how to make myself exciting to learn motivation. After twice meeting learns about motivation, I realized that there is a cause why I still excite to learn motivation. Related to our topic on second meeting, I reflected, the cause why I still excite even I have learned about motivation in previous semester, because I have needs, maybe needs to add my knowledge because I want to make my students later always keep up learning, or maybe needs to fulfill my attendance. Who knows? Just yourself, know and understand your needs exactly. Talk about needs, not all of people realize what they have done or will do is reinforced by needs. Every people have needs. What is the definition of needs, actually? When I knew that the second topic talking about the influence of needs on motivation to learn, in my mind, I just define that needs is something useful for keeping up my learning. During I learned, the earlier conceptions of basic needs: competence (achievement), autonomy and control (power), and relatedness (affiliation). I still remembered when bu Mima started the class by recalling our students’ knowledge in previous meeting. Bu Mima asked to class about applying the theories of motivation in your life. As the example, bu Mima asked to some of my friends about how she or he manages their love relationship and what the theory of motivation they apply to keep their love relationship. The theories of motivation are humanistic, behaviorism, cognitive, socio-cultural. I love the teaching way of bu Mima. For me, it is more effective to teaching because when I got the treatment, more understanding and more enjoy. Back to the reflection, we have already learned one motivation theory that focused on needs – Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow described human needs into two groups. There are Deficiency needs and Growth needs. Deficiency needs described our daily needs. The basic needs of human being are described in here which consists of survival needs, safety needs, belonging needs and self esteem needs. If you are be able to fulfill the deficiency needs, then you are automatically move to up. Growth needs is the top of the Maslow’s hierarchy. Generally, someone who have fulfilled the deficiency needs can reach this part. In this part, you are required to fulfill the intellectual achievement, aesthetic appreciation, and beauty. If you do not fulfill one of them, you will never get satisfied. Sometimes, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is not only started from the bottom, but also it can be started from the other part. It can be happen if we are in new environment system as the example. During learning about Maslow, we also learned about Humanistic theories, the need for self determination, and the need for competence. Bu Mima asked us to read and understood the content of each material. I love this part, because we divided into some groups, created scenario based the materials from the lottery and performed a simple role play in front of the class, then the class tried to guess and determine what materials that we mean from our role play. The materials is about Humanistic theories, the need for self determination, and the need for competence, but each of the materials have the sub topics. There are emotional reactions, autonomy, self-worth, need of relatedness and also praise and criticism. From this part, I learned a lot the materials from each other. This part is more effective than I just read from the books. Lesson learned from this second meeting, discussing sharing practicing is more effective to do teaching and learning. Rubrics performing is also influence someone to show the best perform. If I may conclude that I did role play because of the needs (need to show the best perform to make my friend understand what my group mean and get the nice grades). Needs is influential students’ motivation for learning a lot (for me).
Still about motivation…
Sometimes we need to stop doing activities to make a reflection, but sometimes when we do something, suddenly we can reflect something that never been thought before.
For me, the second case is appropriate for this second session class of MMSEL. How come?
In this session, we did role play. There were five groups in the class. Every group had its own topic to be rolled. My group got the topic about “The need for competence”. The little topic that my group chose was about “Emotional Reaction”. We should prepare the role play in about fifteen minutes.
Somehow, there is a teacher who gives an over-reaction about students’ attitude within learning process. Either it is a successes or failure. My group was focus in this case.
I rolled as the teacher who had that over reaction. I scolded my student who could not do the exercise in front of the class. I also praised my student who could do the exercise fluently.
That teachers’ reaction would bring an impact for both students, whether it is a good impact or the bad one.
The self-esteem of the student who got a failure and then he or she was pressed by the teacher reaction, will decrease suddenly. He or she would think that he or she is not competence in that subject.
For example the teacher said, “You are very foolish”, the students would remember it a long their lives until someone can change its perception. Maybe, he or she cannot trust in his or her competence anymore.
Besides, when the teacher could give a good reaction in the failure of students, maybe it will change their lives. They will get new spirit from the teacher.
For example, when the students get a failure then the teacher said, “Its ok for now. You can study again at home. If you do much practice, you will be a good writer”, etc (another positive respond or reaction that can increase their motivation and belief of their competence).
Teachers can be a hero for the students, but they also can be a devil.
Teachers can be a light for the students, but they also can be a dark.
Teachers can be a cicerone for the students, but they can also be a heretic.
Teachers can be a beautiful flower for the students, but they can also be a parasite.
Teachers can be a honey for the students, but they can also be a poison.
You! Teachers! Who choose,
want to be a hero or devil,
light or darkness,
cicerone or heretic,
beautiful flower or parasite,
honey or poison,
What will you choose then? 🙂

In this week I learn about “The Needs that influence motivation to learn”. In this lecture I learn and recall about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and also the self-determination theory.
In his theory, Maslow described that people needs can be categorized in two groups. The first one is deficiency needs which consist of several stages. They are survival needs (food and water), safety needs(freedom from emotional and physical threat), belongings(love and acceptance from family and peers), self-esteem(recognition and approval) and, and the second one is growth needs which consist of self-actualization stage. According to Maslow, human’s those needs are hierarchical. It’s just like a stair. People have to pass on lower stair before he can reach the higher stair. It means that, human have to fulfill his deficiency needs first before he can show their full potential as human being. Maslow’s theory implies to our teaching and learning activity in classroom. Students cannot show their full potential to learn in classroom when their deficiency needs are not fulfilled yet. For example, when the teacher is being feared by students they will be hesitate to ask questions, so when they found something that they understand some students prefer not to ask the teacher, because they fear the teacher. This is what happened to me.
When I was in elementary school, I had a teacher which I fear most. He often making fun of me in front of the class. He also often gives me physical punishment and often insulting me with rude words. He often do that because he thinks that i do not have enough ability to understand his lesson. All of his treatment to me, made me feel fear of him. He made me feel that I was such a stupid person at that time. He made me shame in front of all of my classmates. That is why I prefer not to ask questions when I did not understand his lesson or explanation, because I am fear that would only made him angry and giving me more punishment. That’s why I cannot do well at his class, because just looking over him would make me fear and lost my mind.
Reflecting from Maslow’s theory and recalling upon what I have experienced in my elementary school, I become understand how pupils’ needs of feeling safety and their self-esteem affect their motivation to learn, which somehow influence their chance to show their full potential as human being.
In this week, I also learn about self-determination, which also talk about human’s needs. From this week MMSEL class, I become understand that humanistic view of motivation concern on how the fulfillment of someone needs influence his/her motivation. From reading the handout and doing role-play presentation I become understand about the self-determination theory which assume humans’ three kinds of needs, they are the need of feeling competence, the need for autonomy and the need of relatedness.
From those three kinds of needs, what I understand most is the need of relatedness. The needs of relatedness, in my words mean the need to be accepted by the people around us. They can be our family, friends or in educational case is people in school environment like teacher and classmates. For me, who studied far away from my family and my hometown friends, people around me now are whole SSE family. If Omrod (2008) states in his book that the need of relatedness is “the desire to establish close emotional bonds and attachments with others”(Omrod,2008,p.378), I just says my need of relatedness is having my classmates, colleagues, and my lecturer supports and help me to learn new knowledge and develop my intellectuality in this campus.
From what I have learn in this second week, I reflect to myself that if I want to motivate my pupils to learn best in my classroom, the important thing that I have to do is providing them with a safety, supportive and warm learning environment like what I have in here, SSE.
Hi guys, back with MMSEL class again, second week. As usual, i begin my reflection with the story. Here is the story begin.
“There were “x” female student in my “y” high school. She always lie to every student in my school, every moment she had. I did not know why, but my prediction was she just wanted to become first-full attention (she thought that she had never been noted as a friend). She always said something as if she was competent in the part of her story, or in other words she was just trying to say that she was good on it.
She always wanted to show that she was good, but she was not with what she had done, told so many lies. You know what was next?everybody was hate and tried to ignore her.
In my observation, she was not too good on academic. Mostly she never did her group homework because she always came home earlier. She knew she would be rejected, so i think she decided not to be active in group work.
There was somebody which is my classmate wanted to know why she had been like that. She guessed that it was because her family. Maybe there was something wrong with it. But her guess was just wrong; my “x” friend was accepted firmly in her family. It was good, peaceful, but sometimes her mother spoke with a high tone, seemed she grew up in a tough family environment.
With the ignorance of friends, she became loner. Mostly she wanted to do anything alone. Like nobody in class knew her that she was exist in this world.
In a big picture; Maslow divided needs into two big category, deficiency need and growth need. After i studied MMSEL in second week material, the influence on motivation to learn, i could know why she did that. If i related it in theory of Maslow, She just wanted to fulfill the deficiencies need. It is showed when she lie to everybody that she was good on something, she needed recognition and approval. She also needed love and acceptance from peers; she always tried to show that she knew everything. She just wanted to be accepted.
I also learned about the need of self-determination, the need to preserve self worth. The need for competence showed in my “x” friend wanted to be looked as she were competence, she thought that she needed to have self determination, or “need for competence” in spesific, so she could control the environment. Make her self esteem rised.
Another form of needs of competence is by attributional statement and also prise or criticsm: which is expected by my “x” friend come to her about his performence in “fake story”.
I also learn about self handicapping, it was new for me. Self handicapping is strategies to protect self worth. People always try to find reasons when they are failed. They are ashamed to other people if they were failed. It is purposed to make their self esteem is protected, for example failing in examination (i could get better score than this, i was just wrong in reading material)
see? with the power of needs, people could motivate themselves to do anything to reach their needs. How if it is related to learning? Students want to get higher score, and then they would energize themselves to achieve the goals, high mark. It is motivation. So it is showed that needs has a relationship with motivation.
Huah,, MMSEL course is remind me to Educational Psychology course again. In the first week, there is motivation’s theory. Then, in the second week, there is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. It is about theory of five humans’ need by Abraham Maslow. There are Survival, safety, belonging, self-esteem, and self- actualization. I think that all of them are very important to support human life.
Maslow said that the theory is hierarchy, so have to pass step by step, from the survival until self-actualization. However, I think that this theory is haven’t to step by step. For example, someone can fulfill belonging need, but she/he can’t fulfill survival need enough. I have a friend that he fulfills his love and acceptance from peers although he has enough shelter and food. Something likes that. It is real 🙂
The others think about Maslow’s theory is self-actualization. It is need to reach the full potentials and capable in the some situation. Everybody has different self-actualization. I mean, everybody feel capable and be a number one in the different situations. My friend has a self-actualization when she has the greater mark from the others. For me, when I teach my students, and I feel smarter than her, so I have high self-actualization 🙂
After I learnt about the Maslow’s theory, I also learnt about The Need for Self-Determination. There are the needs for competence, Praise and Criticism, The Need for Autonomy, The Need for Relatedness, The Need to preserve self-worth. Ms. Mima designed a nice activity in the classroom. She divided us in pairs, and then we discussed in the group of four or five. My group discussed about The Need for Relatedness. After that, we have to present our discussion in the role play in 10 – 15 minutes.
We present to class that relatedness is describing the feeling of connected to others, love and respect. It is shown by communicating between teacher with students, or student with other students. Students are more engaged behaviorally, cognitively and emotionally, in classroom activities when they believe their teacher like, understand, and empathize with them (H. A. Davis, 2006; Furrer & Skinner, 2003). My group compare the differences between teacher who relatedness to students and not. It is very interesting. Because I learn much from this activity, also from the others group who get the different topic. We guess the others’ group role play. So, we can share each other.
I wait the next nice activity Ms 🙂
This is the second reflection of mine after I had the second meeting with Bu Mima. In this meeting, she delivered the material about “Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Needs and Influencing Students’ Perception of Competence”. One thing that I like from Bu Mima’s class is her ability to make the class felt alive by her kidding with us. It effectively turned up my laughter and abated my boredom and my “motivation” to sleep. 🙂
Here I would like to be more focus on elaborating my reflection of Maslow’s theory. Briefly, the important thing that should be remembered from Maslow is his “story” about human needs. He said that human needs formed hierarchy, began from Deficiency Needs to Growth Needs. Inside of Deficiency Needs, there are 1) Survival, 2) Safety, 3) Belongingness and 4) Self Esteem. Then, in the top of human needs is Growth Needs, i.e. self-actualization. By pairs’ discussion, I got additional information about self-actualization. Inside of self-actualization, obviously there are three components, i.e. intellectual, beauty and esthetic. Those are the base to be able to do self-actualization.
The most interesting of the discussion about “Mbah” Maslow’s Theory was when we were triggered by Bu Mima. She triggered about could human achieve the higher level of it’s hierarchy without passed through the lower one? Then, my friends and I thought about that. There were two different opinions exactly. First, human could achieve the higher one without passed through the lower one. This opinion was agreed by most of my friends in the class. They gave example that there is person in the remote area who can do self-actualization. They continued by implying that that person don’t passed through the safety and belongingness levels. That’s the first opinion. Otherwise, the second opinion state that every person can’t pass through the higher level without they get the lower level first. I strongly agree with this second opinion. Actually, I disagree with the first example which says that it doesn’t pass through the safety and belongingness levels. According to me, although that person lives in remote area, it doesn’t mean that he/she lives alone. Of course, there exist other persons who live around him/her who love and help to get higher self-esteem until do self-actualization because human is social creature. They can’t live alone. According to me, the first example is nonsense if our context is real life. The core of my opinion is every person has to fulfill all their deficiency needs first, so that they can do self-actualization. If we think logically, people can’t get safety if their need for survival is not accomplished. Then, they will not get belongingness if their needs for survival and safety are not accomplished. It’s also their need for getting self-esteem. Without the needs of belongingness, it’s unbelievable to get higher self-esteem. Without the needs of self-esteem, they will not be able to do self-actualization. Thus, those are the needs that have to be fulfilled orderly.
The second trigger from Bu Mima was do those needs are stable or not. Here, there just be one opinion, i.e. it’s not stable. Based on my thinking, that’s right because logically, we know that the human life is complex. People have feeling that make their condition of mental and physical body unstable, usually high and also low. It’s the humanity. Therefore, those human needs are very flexible for people. It means that along the people’s life, become impossible to have one rigid process only. If we say that the process is rigid (stable), it’s not life.
Second meeting, just enjoyable as usual. Well, in this week we learned about theory of Needs, began with Maslow’s hierarchy of Needs, and some kind of Needs theory that are: need for Self-Determination, need for competence, need for autonomy, need for relatedness and need to preserve self-worth, then did role play which is to test and make deep understanding about the kind of needs that related with our life.
Well, Maslow described human needs in two groups that are deficiency needs that consist of survival, safety, belongings and self-esteem, and also growth needs that consist of self-actualization. Maslow state that the deficiency needs should met before move to growth needs. Then, we found out and discuss that there are some people with disabilities or special needs can reach their full potential, such as there were a man that didn’t have feet and hand but still can paint, using their mouth. So, Maslow’s statements are not always true in all condition. Therefore, we will concern more about growth needs (self-actualization) which is will help us to reach our potential and can be anything like we want rather than deficiency needs . Since growth needs more related to intellectual achievement and aesthetic appreciation that increase sine people have experience with that, then, I have my self-actualization when I was in senior high school, yes, I’m actually such kind of talkative and always find the reason to rebate person. So, I become one of the debater team in my school till I got the chances to join some debate competition and win it, and what I like, I ever become the best speaker of my team. However, it was a past, but that was my self-actualization. Become debater, best speaker and winner…ow…that’s about Maslow’s hierarchy.
Besides learn about Maslow’s hierarchy, we also learned about theory of needs. There are four, as mentioned before. Well, because I’m just a good student in my school, I think my school life is convince me that I have needs for competence when I’m still at schools. It had a reason of course why I think like that. Since in junior high school till senior high school, I love physics so much. May, in the first, I don’t really like it, but then, I got good teacher of physics since in junior high school. At the beginning I don’t show any full of interest because there were like a collection of formula, well, then my teacher just talk to me and said, “you just a good in mathematics, why don’t you in physics…I think u can be good physician if you try harder”. Well, after that, my feelings is just like usual, but, the difference is I want to read and learn before the lesson is start because I don’t want to be like a foolish in physics, even in my physics teacher, and from there I know that physics is interesting thing, just any real life problem around us that may can be solved mathematically, of course with concept. But, I found it interesting, challenging. Besides that, the condition that made by my teacher also conduct our learning that become meaningful, she like direct practicum rather than just apply formula. Sometimes I felt down because there were some difficulties, but again she support me like usual. Till I was in senior high school, the condition is quite different, the teacher was more strict in mark, just make me felt..huft..again, but, the difference is my junior high school know I’m quite good in physics, that make me think should I gave up for my love?? Then I got the answer is not. Maybe your teacher can do everything, blame our answer or whatever, but, physics is always challenging, therefore I’d rather to do the assignment with my own ways rather than teacher. I liked to try physics problem since I hope can improve my physics problem solving and the main was I don’t want to be shamed in front of my friends because I become silly in physics. It was my story with physics, some course that I want to be expert in that.
Step to the next activities of this week, we also have the role-play about topics of needs, especially about praise and criticism which both can detract or may increase the motivation based on the appropriateness, need of autonomy in class which teacher could gave the choices for students and can increase intrinsic motivation, self-worth which is self-esteem could influence effort and ability, and also need of relatedness which is need to be accepted by others.
So, by learn all of these needs, we as the teacher later should consider meeting students’ need for increasing the motivation, for example, to help students with need of relatedness, we should treat them as our best friend or some kind like that and so on. Thank you…
Apparently, the lesson will full of familiar words. That was what I thought when I open the module, topic 2. It would be talking about Needs. Yups, a big Maslow-hierarchical-needs –triangle is sketched there. Maslow. Although I’ve heard this famous psychologist in my first semester, I realized that I did not know a lot about his theory of needs.
At that time, I only knew his precious hierarchy is rigid and inflexible. Just after somebody pursues his/her first need (which is physiology such as, clothes, food, and shelter), he/she may move on to the next level of needs (safety, belonging, self esteem, and self-actualization). However, although it is logical, now I understand that it may not be that rigid. Sometimes people are lacking in so many things but they are still able to reach their full potential. For example, people who had disability. I experienced there are a lot of special needs people in this world can survive and even succeed in their life. As we know that they may not have enough “physiology needs”. They are able to jump to their own self-actualization and so satisfy about themselves.
Enough about Maslow. It is quite serious because in class, we were having pair discussion and reading lots of materials. But now, it was different. There were still so many readings though, but, we were asked to have a role play! The topic was about another theory of needs: The needs for self-determination and the needs to preserve self-worth.
There were five groups paling roles. When one of the groups was performing, the rest of the class were asked to guess what topic that the performance about. The topics are the need to preserve self-worth, attributional statement, praise and criticism, emotional reaction, autonomy, and relatedness.
The role plays were really helpful. Although it was a bit hard to guess what performance belongs to what topic, it was quite interesting to see my friends prepared it and tried to make me remember the topic better (since it mostly will be short-term memory if it is only lecturing, right?).
I think I will not forget those performances easily. That’s why I think I can preserve my memory on this topic of needs longer. Besides, my friends had already fulfill my need of relatedness, so, it will be disappointing if I forget those “wonderful” performance easily.:P
As I guessed before, we will learn about motivation deeply in this course. And that is true. In the second week we were learned about The Influence of Needs on Motivation to Learn. In this topic, we learned about Maslow’s hierarchy of need and the need for self-determination (such as the need for competence, autonomy, relatedness, assessment and learning).
In last Monday, actually I sat in front seat (near the door) but when Ms. Mima asked us to discuss in pairs about Maslow’s Hierarchy of need and Humanistic Theories articles, she asked us to make a pairs with friend who sat far from us so I moved to the back seat. In the back seat I got a chair in the corner of class. After read the articles we discuss in pair, then Ms. Mima asked some of us about “what is our opinion about the hierarchy, could we skip a step in that hierarchy?” and my friend’s opinions were diverse. Suddenly Ms. Mima called me, but she didn’t call my name she called me with my seat position, “you who quite and sit in the right corner of this class, what is your opinion?”, I was a bit shock but it was nice. And I told that in my opinion it could not skip each other because in Hierarchy it relate each other, for example in someone’s survival needs do not fulfilled, so will be something lack in her/his self and it will be make she/he could not fulfill the other needs. By the way, I like Ms. Mima ways in teaching, so fun and interesting, she always involve students to be more active in teaching and learning.
In the role play part, we had to determine what is the role play topic in each group (what kind of self-determination that played by that group), so we had to watching and read the article carefully to determine it. I saw most of us make a role play from a real life case for example in my Group. My group would make a role play with Topic “The Need for Relatedness”. After we spent some times to discuss about the scenario, we did a role play. Our role play told about a student who excommunicated from her friends, no friends who want to be her group mate. In our role play there were two scenes, first scene with unwise and not good personality teacher and the second one with a wise teacher.
The unwise teacher let students made group by themselves, even the teacher have known about a student who excommunicated by the other, she even participated treat unfair with that student. When that student gave a question to the teacher, the teacher ignores her. Otherwise, the wise teacher would not let them make groups by themselves because she know that there is a students excommunicated in this class. So, teacher divides and determines the groups. The wise teacher also did not participate treat unfair with that student, she answer that student’s question wisely. Because a good teacher should be realize that everyone need for relatedness to increase the motivation. Like in article that given by Ms Mima Relatedness, the feeling of being connected to others in one’s social environment and feeling worthy of love and respect (Maslow, 1968, 1970. Teachers can help meet students’ needs for relatedness and approval by communicating unconditional positive regard and a genuine commitment to students and their learning (Cornelius-white,2007)
I hope from role play that we did, we could take heed. Follow the positive example and leave the negative example. As a teacher candidate in the future we hope that we give a better treatment for students, better system and strategy in teaching for better generation in Indonesia. ^_^
That’s all my second week reflection of MMSEL course. Thank You.
by Synta Canydia
This is our second week in MMSEL Class.
The class started and review again about theories of motivation a bit. I like it so much when Ms Mima asked questions about how we motivate someone we close with to learn. Some of my friends shared their thought about that topic. It reminded me alot about the humanism theory. So basically, we often use this approach when interacting in real life, not only in teaching and learning context. 🙂
Then, we also discussed about Needs. This is not a so ‘new’ concept for me but my memory about that is kind of fading now. So, I glad we talked about it again. Since, needs will effect our motivation, it is important to understand our needs. The Maslow’s hierarchy of needs explained that people have two level of needs. The deficiency needs come before the growth needs. It is said that we need to fulfill our basic need in order to reach our self-actualization needs. For example, sometimes we barely can’t think about a serious mathematical problem when we are so busy thinking about how to get food to make our stomach full. We need our self-actualization need but it is difficult to reach that level without fulling our basic needs. In teaching and learning, we have to consider this part as an important issue. In some cases, there would be students who have problems in learning because teacher can not realize what the students actually need, not what we think they need.
The most exciting part in this session was when we do role play in groups. Every group got different sub topics and have to performed it right away at that time. I am not a typical ‘actor-like-student’. I don’t enjoy acting or drama very much but i like to watch it. I watched the performance of each group carefully and tried to guessed what topic they were trying to convey. I guessed it all correct: The Need for Competence, The Need of Relatedness, The Need of Autonomy and The Need of Preserve Self-Worth (the topic of our own group). The performances were very good and I learned so much from it. It was about how teacher can influence students’ perception about their competence by giving appropriate “praise & criticism” and “emotional reaction” to students. It also told about story of an ‘outlier’ in a class. This is not supposed to be happened. Teacher should facilitates all students to be actively participate in the teaching and learning process. Students also want their voices to be heard. Teachers need to consider students’ choice and give them chance to choose. Our group story was about a student who lies about not-studying at night in order to preserve his self-worth. Trough this role play, I got a pretty clearer image about those kind of needs stated above. It will stock in my head longer if I can see by myself that particular concepts in real life, rather than just read it in books alone.
Hope to learn more about motivation in teaching and learning soon.. 🙂
