The influence of beliefs on motivation to learn is my topic title for this session. There would be expectation, beliefs and self-efficacy. I felt there were so many interesting things from this session. There were much fun, meaningful, understandable and applicable.
Firstly, lecturer asked each of students when we achieved our self-actualization on five to ten years ahead. I thought this question is a little bit embarrassing because everyone in class would know your hopes. However, I should answer by saying “I will have reach my self-actualization when I graduate from master degree and then teach in secondary school in Jakarta”. Everyone seemed so surprise listening my answer. I did not know why. Perhaps they were all thinking my answer would more be sophisticated. Actually, my self-actualization was not as simple as what I am saying in class. That was the general idea, for real. I have thought the more specific thing about my self-actualization, but it is not for public :). In conclusion, what I learned from every my friend’s answer is self-actualization would be so much different from you to other, even with your boyfriend whom you know deeply crazily.
Secondly, We were doing free writing (with a border actually). I love free writing so much. Lecturer gives us four guided-questions in doing free writing. As for me, the questions were about our expectation to our self, course, lecturer, and campus. I answered very well, but I did not what for is it. Did my lecturer assess that paper? She told she would let us know after next activity.
Thirdly, we were doing Jigsaw’s approach. My lecturer loves this method more than she loved anything I thought :). I got a group consist of four person. I had expert group and also the original group. I got the material about Self efficacy and the factors influence students’ self efficacy. It was a nice reading. I would tell you some parts.
Bandura (1986) said that there were so many factors that influence students’ self-efficacy. They are past performance, modeling, verbal persuasion and psychological state. Past performance on mathematics test will influence students’ self-efficacy on the next text. It can be high and also low. Teacher should anticipate every possible thing to her/his students. Modeling is more about finding a role model to increase or decrease students’ self efficacy. Verbal persuasion can be from teachers’ comment toward students’ work. For instance, to increase students’ self-efficacy teacher will said “I thing you can make the fine report next week”. Psychological state is about the students’ physical condition that will influence their self-efficacy, e.g. students in hunger or fatigue.
After discussing in expert group, we went back to our original group. We discussed everything about our materials since we had different reading to each other. I also listened and learned from my friends’ explanation. There were so many deep thoughts around students’ expectation, belief, and value. The wise thing I learned is we should be flexible as a teacher in our classroom. We should have empathy to students’ condition. They are all need the teacher care so much in school.
Fourthly, lecturer gave back our free writing then asked us to analyze our friends’ writing then we made a comment in which part of the writing there is belief or expectation or self efficacy. I was so surprised. If I know that she will ask us to analyze the writing then I will write it systematically. Well, it has happened. So, I analyzed my friend’s writing. It was a bit hard to find the self-efficacy, value and belief on his writing. The writing is more about the expectation. Finally, I could analyze some parts about belief. What I learned is my friend has high self-efficacy toward his academic life.
I got a meaningful and fun learning on today’s session. I wish I can explore more about the self efficacy, belief, value and expectation for my self and also for my students.
